How Often Should I Clean My Blinds?

Over the years we all know that dust and debris will build up on our household surfaces. Where many of us will dust and wipe our worktops and cabinets once a week – a surface that is often forgotten about is our blinds.

It is very important to wipe and clean your blinds now and again to keep them fresh and new, but the question is how often do you need to do this? And how?

From installing brand new blinds in Cranbourne to maintaining ones from your home’s previous owner – it is important to know what you are dealing with and how to maintain your blinds this year.

How Often

The easiest figure we can give you is to clean your blinds once a month. Every month you should be cleaning your blinds to get rid of any dust, debris, grease and dirt that may have piled up during this time. It is important to remember that your blinds should be cleaned often to make your home look tidier and more hygienic but also for your health. Trapped pet hair and other things could irritate your allergies and cause respiratory struggles.

But how can we clean our blinds?

A Quick Wipe

If you maintain your blinds often and they aren’t dirty at the moment, you can just carry out a quick clean to maintain it and move on. When cleaning either plastic, metal or wooden blinds you simply need a microfibre cloth to keep it clean and dust free. If you have fabric blinds you can use a vacuum cleaner with a small attachment to clean them.

Cleaning Deeply

It is common for your blinds in the kitchen as well as the bathroom to get much dirtier than other rooms in the house and this can be for several reasons. Your kitchen blinds might end up covered in grease from cooking and your bathroom blinds might become a little mouldy from the damp. There are different methods you can use to clean each type of blind thoroughly to keep them hygienic:

  • Plastic and metal – if you have either plastic or metal blinds your cleaning should be fairly simple to do. You’ll start by vacuuming or wiping away dust, and then you can move on to wiping your blinds thoroughly with antibacterial spray to get rid of stains and tough spots. You can also use a mixture of water and lemon juice 1:1 to clean your blinds and leave them smelling fresh.
  • Wood – if you have wood blinds in your home you will need to be a little more careful with what you use to clean your blinds simply because it could soak into the wood and damage it. You can start off by vacuuming the blinds and then you’ll be able to use a damp cloth to wipe the blinds and get rid of any grease. You want to avoid harsh chemicals here and also don’t leave the blinds wet as this can weather it. Once you have wiped them with a damp cloth be sure to wipe them again with a dry cloth.
  • Fabric – fabric blinds are the most difficult to clean and you may even need to send these to a fry cleaner to do a proper job. However to clean your fabric blinds at home you can statue with a vacuum to get rid of the bulk of the mess and then use a slightly damp cloth dipped into a mixture of water and detergent to spot clean the blinds wherever they need it. Never submerge blinds in water.
